In times of economic difficulties and of rapid change, ‘Collaborating to Compete’ will demonstrate how museums and galleries can create opportunities for significant and dynamic change. This conference will provide both an inspirational and practical insight into different ways of working both in Scotland and internationally. It will explore the wider themes of sustainability, innovation, entrepreneurship, social enterprise, partnership and resilience, and will focus on 3 central themes:
- New partnerships – working in partnership can provide stronger projects and results. New partnerships will look at how collaborative working can deliver innovative projects but also looks at how museums can attract new partners.
- Sustainability - sustainability covers economic, environmental and social areas. It will look at practice, projects and organizations looking to resource their organizations in new and innovative ways and being less reliant on traditional forms of public funding.
- Entrepreneurship – is about doing things innovatively and differently. It will encompass both an entrepreneurial business style and also new and effective ways of working ( through the social media, creative fundraising & resourcing, new approaches to learning, and improved standards).cai
Purpose: This conference is aimed at all those working in culture, heritage and the third sector and will provide a platform for best practice in the 21st century. We are seeking contributions from both the museum and gallery sector and beyond which demonstrate unique or innovative approaches to changing times.The conference will create opportunities for knowledge exchange between museums and galleries and other sectors.

We act as the representative for our sector, promoting its work to the public, stakeholders and the Scottish Government. This involves speaking on behalf of the sector and showing that museums and galleries are not only custodians of Scotland’s rich and diverse history, but also have a lot to contribute to modern society. We have over 340 member museums Scotland-wide, ranging from small local museums to larger regional and national museums.
